TRIBECA — After 18 years in Chelsea, the Alexander and Bonin Gallery is heading south.

The contemporary art gallery is moving from its space at 18th Street and 10th Avenue to 47 Walker St. in TriBeCa this summer, the gallery announced on its website.

Longtime gallery owners Carolyn Alexander and Theodore Bonin told The New York Times that their building is being torn down and rent prices in Chelsea's gallery-packed neighborhood are going up.

While prices keep soaring and pushing small businesses out in TriBeCa, relocating to a larger space in TriBeCa was the best option for the gallery, the owners said.

For years, the gallery has represented emerging and established artists, from the U.S. and internationally. Its last exhibit featured the work of Fernando Bryce, a Peruvian artist based in Lima and New York who often re-examines the ways historical events are represented in printed media through his art.

“We’ve always been a gallery people come to, to see the artists we represent,” Bonin told The Times. “We have enjoyed the peacefulness of this location and we’re going to achieve that again at Walker Street. It’s a beautiful block that is away from all the noise and rushing quality of much of Manhattan. You sort of feel you’ve stepped into another time.”
