STATEN ISLAND — Staten Island's new district attorney Michael McMahon vowed to tackle the borough's problems with drugs, guns and domestic violence when he takes office Jan.1.
During his inauguration speech at Wagner College on Sunday, McMahon called on Mayor Bill de Blasio — who also spoke at the event — to increase funding and resources for the DA's office, including adding a dedicated narcotics bureau in the borough, Newsday reported.
“Let us resolve that we will stop the mindless death of young people to the scourge of drugs, to prosecute the dealers, to help the addicted when possible and to prevent this cycle from continuing,” McMahon told the crowd, according to Newsday.
He'll replace Rep. Dan Donovan, who left the office after he was elected to Congress in a special election to fill Michael Grimm's vacated seat.
At the inauguration, de Blasio lauded the city's lower crime numbers and asked members of the crowd to thank the NYPD for their work, 1010 Wins reported.
“For almost a quarter century, thanks to the NYPD, we have gotten safer and safer,” de Blasio said, according to 1010 Wins. “That is a blessing.”
McMahon will officially take over for Acting District Attorney Daniel Master Jr. in January.
