VIDEO: Tourism Board Promotes West Village Gay Bars, 'Friendly Locals'

By Danielle Tcholakian | December 23, 2015 6:54pm

WEST VILLAGE — The city's tourism board regularly promotes different places in the city — from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx to St. George on Staten Island — and for its final neighborhood of 2015, the board picked the West Village.

To tell tourists about the neighborhood, the board produced a short documentary explaining how its LGBT history endures today.

The board also put together an online "Insider Guide" highlighting different places around the West Village.

One page notes that along with being an LGBT mecca, the West Village is a haven for literary-minded visitors and bibliophiles, with unique independent stores like Three Lives & Company.

And while the board highlights the usual suspects in the gay scene — Stonewall Inn and Julius' Bar — members also note the watering holes that are popular with lesbians, like Henrietta Hudson, whose owners are featured in the video, and Cubby Hole.

Check out the rest of the featured West Village spots here, and let us know on Neighborhood Square where your must-see spots are in the neighborhood.
