Holiday Service Changes to Impact Subway, Buses, Metro-North, LIRR: MTA

MIDTOWN — Christmas and New Year's are nearly upon us.

Whether you're planning to leave New York City for some hot toddies in a more rustic environment or staying to brave the hordes and see the ball drop, you may want to check out the MTA’s holiday service changes before making your travel plans.

Christmas Eve

The subway and Staten Island Railway will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Metro-North will also run on a regular weekday schedule with 18 additional trains departing Grand Central between noon and 4:10 p.m.

The LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule and provide 13 additional trains leaving Penn Station between 12:43 p.m. and 3:48 p.m.

Buses will also run on a normal schedule with some minor time changes. Staten Island will have some service changes with limited-stop routes S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96 and S98 running weekday local service.

The S89 and S93 will operate on normal schedules with some minor time changes.

MTA bridges and tunnels will suspend all construction lane closures starting at 1 p.m.

Christmas Day

Subway lines will operate on a Sunday schedule and buses will run on a holiday schedule.

The LIRR will run on a holiday schedule and Metro-North will provide hourly service on all their lines east of the Hudson. Lines to the west will run on a weekend schedule.

The Staten Island Railway will run on a Saturday schedule.

Bridges and tunnels will suspend all lane closures related to maintenance and construction work.

New Year’s Eve

People heading to see the ball drop are advised to use Metro-North and avoid taking a subway to the Times Square subway station, which may have some exits closed.

The northbound platform for the 1 line at 50th Street and both uptown and downtown platforms for NQR lines at 49th Street will be closed from 7 p.m. until after midnight.

Riders are advised to exit at 57th or 59th Street-Columbus Circle and walk to Times Square.

Additional service provide on all other subway lines.

Train lines in and around Times Square will run every 8 to 12 minutes until about 3 a.m. and 42nd Street shuttles will operate overnight.

The M5, M7, M20, M42, M50, and M104 buses may also be rerouted before and during the festivities. Regular overnight bus service will resume after midnight as streets reopen.

The LIRR will add an additional 13 trains from Penn Station between 12:43 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. Later in day, there will be 20 extra trains heading into Penn Station for people heading to Times Square and the Phish concert at Madison Square Garden.

Metro-North will run on a modified weekday schedule, with extra trains leaving Grand Central between noon and 4 p.m. There also be extra service provided for people heading into the city for New Year’s Eve.

Buses will operate on a weekday schedule with minor time changes, except for Staten Island where the following limited-stop routes will operate with weekday local service: S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96 and S98.

The limited-stop S89 and S93 routes will operate on a weekday schedule.

All Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens “X” express routes will run on a weekday schedule.

Bridges and tunnels will again suspend lane closures related to maintenance and construction work starting at 1 p.m.

New Year’s Day

The LIRR will have an additional 20 trains leaving from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal during the early morning hours from 12:35 a.m. to 4:19 a.m.

Metro-North will run extra service from Grand Central after midnight.

Extra service will also be provide on lines to the east of the Hudson headed back into the city after midnight.

The subway will run on a Sunday schedule throughout the day and the Staten Island Railway will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Bridges and tunnels, again, will suspend all lane closures.
