KINGSBRIDGE — A new pop-up enrollment site for the city's popular municipal identification cards is about to open in The Bronx.

The Kingsbridge Library, located at 291 W. 231st St., will serve as a place for New Yorkers to get their IDNYC cards from Dec. 21 through Jan. 15, and residents can make an appointment to do so at www.nyc.gov/idnyc.

The city initially launched its municipal ID program at the beginning of the year. Demand was so high that people waited in line for hours to get into enrollment centers, and appointments to get the cards were backed up for months.

The ID cards come with several benefits, including making people eligible for one year of free membership at 40 cultural institutions in New York, including the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden.

They can also be used as library cards and allow people to open bank or credit accounts at several financial institutions in the city.

Every New Yorker who is at least 14 years old is eligible for an IDNYC card, regardless of their immigration status. They must complete an application for the card and show proof of identity and residency, with acceptable documents including a passport, driver's license, letters and bills.

Cards are free for everyone who applies before the end of 2016, and they are valid for five years from the time of the application's approval.
