QUEENS — A knife-wielding man wearing a surgical mask and gloves slashed a Chinese exchange student in an apparent random attack as she walked to school in Whitestone Wednesday morning, police said.

The 16-year-old girl was walking east on 13th Avenue, near 147th Street, when a man wearing a hood came up from behind and slashed her twice across the left cheek and throat about 8:20 a.m., the NYPD said.

“She’s walking to school with her bookbag,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. “It came out of nowhere.

“It’s very disturbing."

The girl was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital with two wounds to the face, one stretching from her ear to the middle of her throat, Boyce added.

The girl, who’s been in New York about eight months, needed surgery, but her injuries weren’t considered life threatening, the chief added.

The suspect, who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a black hood, ran toward 146th Street after the attack, police said.

Police released surveillance footage which shows the suspect running towards the victim and then fleeing the scene.

No arrest have been made, police said.

The DOE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
