GOWANUS — A microbrewery on a mission to highlight New York state farmers opens this Thursday.

Strong Rope Brewery will serve beers made with locally grown ingredients starting with an opening party at 5 p.m. on Dec. 17, owner Jason Sahler announced in an email Tuesday.

"Our clean fermented ales will focus on the malt, hops and seasonal fruits, herbs and spices to showcase what our amazing local farms have to offer," Sahler said.

Sahler was an award-winning home brewer for years before launching Strong Rope Brewery with the help of a Kickstarter campaign.

The brewery, at 574A President St., near Fourth Avenue, will serve a rotation of Sahler's creations but won't have food. Customers are welcome to bring in food from nearby restaurants, Sahler told DNAinfo New York in November.

The space was previously occupied by pickle maker Brooklyn Brine, which moved to Industry City in Sunset Park but still runs the Pickle Shack restaurant on Fourth Avenue and Union Street.

Strong Rope is one of several new venues opening in Gowanus. Others include the Peruvian seafood restaurant Surfish Bistro and the Korean barbecue and karaoke lounge Insa.
