MANHATTAN — A man tried to rape a 60-year-old woman inside an East Harlem apartment building earlier this month, police said.

On Dec. 8, the suspect entered the building on East 131st Street at about 7:45 p.m. and approached the woman while she was inside a compactor room, police said. He covered the victim's mouth, put her into a bear hug and then brought her to the ground, police said.

The man tried to remove her pants, grab her groin and strangle her, the NYPD said. It was unclear how she escaped the attacker.

The woman received treatment for cuts and bruises and was in stable condition, police said.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
