Creative Tenant Sought for Pier 76 in Hudson River

CHELSEA — The operators of Pier 76 are seeking a creative tenant to lease space just a few blocks from the newly opened 7 train station at 34th Street.

The Hudson River Park Trust put out a Request for Proposals (RFP) Monday searching for a company to lease a 6,000-square-foot tented structure on the pier, along with an 18,506-square-foot area on the ground and second-floor levels and a 13,091-square-foot parking and loading area.

“The west side of Manhattan is evolving rapidly and this space connects to the epicenter of Manhattan’s New West Side across from the Javits Center and Hudson Yards,” a representative for the trust wrote in the announcement.

“It’s an ideal space for art, production and film studios.”

Although the trust encouraged creative applicants to apply, it emphasized that zoning and the Hudson River Park Act will not permit the space — located between West 35th and West 36th streets on 12th Ave. — to be occupied by a restaurant, bar, nightclub, hotel or event venue, nor by a residential, office or manufacturing tenant.

The RFP comes in the wake of a controversial plan ultimately ditched by the trust to bring a beer garden to Pier 62. It caused an uproar among the community and elected officials.

Some felt the public pier should not be used as a venue for a private restaurant, while others argued a restaurant that served booze would destroy the serene nature of the location.

Tenants wanting to move into the Pier 76 space can only remain there temporarily as the offer is for a short-term, five-year lease, with a pair of two-year extensions.

The site sits next to a location currently used as a tow pound by the NYPD.

Proposals can be submitted to the Hudson River Park Trust until Jan. 13, 2016.
