NEW YORK CITY—Mayor Bill de Blasio will undergo surgery for a hernia Friday, according to his spokeswoman.

"Mayor de Blasio will undergo surgery to address a hernia that developed recently and, as a result, will not be conducting official business at City Hall on Friday," de Blasio spokeswoman Karen Hinton wrote in an email to the City Hall press corps.

According to the memo, de Blasio, 54, will resume his public duties on Sunday and will return to City Hall on Monday.

City Hall officials declined to disclose at which hospital de Blasio will receive the surgery. Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris will be in charge during the mayor's surgery.

A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes its way through a weak spot in muscle or connective tissue fibers. There are multiple types of hernias.

City Hall sources believe de Blasio's hernia may have been hastened, but not caused, by an uptick in athletic activity this summer, such as softball games against the City Council and the City Hall press corps and one-on-one soccer games with his son Dante before he headed off to college at Yale.

"In the line of duty," Hinton responded when asked how de Blasio acquired the hernia.

The mayor was experiencing some minor pain related to the hernia but his doctors felt they should tackle the issue before it became worse.

Public Advocate Tish James is second in line to succeed de Blasio. However, when the mayor took a nine-day family trip to Italy in 2014, he also signed an executive order leaving Shorris in charge.

James' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
