CONCOURSE — South Bronx sushi lovers just got a new place to eat.

The Asia Grill Express, located at 888B Grand Concourse near Yankee Stadium and the courthouses, opened last week and serves customers a mixture of Chinese and Japanese food.

David Wang, general manager of the restaurant, previously operated an Asian eatery out of Concourse Plaza but said he lost his spot there when the owner emptied out the food court as part of an overhaul of the complex.

But his new restaurant offers customers more and healthier options for food, specifically thanks to its sushi bar.

"Sushi is a kind of healthy food," he said. "If people wanted sushi, they'd have to go to Manhattan, maybe 20 minutes away from here."

Fans of sushi could also go to Ceetay in Port Morris, but that is still about 20 minutes away from the Asia Grill Express.

Wang's new restaurant serves typical sushi fare like California Rolls and Salmon Rolls and offers a lunch special from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. where customers can get any two rolls for $7.45 or any three rolls for $9.45.

The eatery also serves several different types of teriyaki and lo mein dishes and bubble teas.

Shaneiry Lora, a 24-year-old daycare owner, was at the restaurant on Thursday night and said she appreciated the diversity it added to the types of eateries in the neighborhood.

"It's definitely a little more gourmet. I love it so far," she said. "I like the whole display and sushi bar experience. We don't really see that around here."

Cary Goodman, executive director of the 161st Street Business Improvement District, said the restaurant was a welcome addition to the neighborhood as it will provide residents with an option for eating healthy food.

He also hoped to see one of the Yankees’ top pitchers stop by once the season starts up again.

“If we’re going to have a master sushi chef and Masahiro Tanaka back from his surgery healthy, ready to go, who knows?” Goodman asked. “Maybe he’ll pop in.”

Asia Grill Express is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
