STATEN ISLAND — Staten Island is getting into the holiday spirit with several Christmas tree and menorah lightings scheduled around the borough this month.

The ceremonies kick off on Tuesday when Borough President James Oddo hosts a ceremony for the lighting of the large tree in front of Borough Hall at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a visit from Santa, who will give out books to children, and musical and dramatic performances from several local groups, Oddo said.

On Friday Dec. 4, Staten Islanders can visit two different tree lighting ceremonies.

► The South Shore Business Improvement District and Councilman Joe Borelli will host their annual Christmas tree lighting inside Annadale Park from 7 to 9 p.m.

This year, the group added an additional 150 lights to the tree and the free event will feature Santa, train rides and musical performances.

► In New Springville, the Staten Island Mall will once again host its annual holiday celebration — with a visit from Santa, a tree lighting ceremony and a food and toy drive — on Dec. 4. It follows outcry from residents when they tried to quietly cancel it last month.

► On Sunday, Historic Richmond Town will host its traditional tree lighting at 5 p.m. and a $2 Christmas event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

► And on Dec. 9, Oddo will host a menorah lighting in front of Borough Hall at 6:30 p.m. with musical performances from local groups.
