WINDSOR TERRACE — Southern-style comfort food is coming soon to Windsor Terrace.

The owners of Brooklyn Commune are opening a soul food joint called Butterfunk Kitchen right next door to their existing restaurant.

Chef Chris Scott and his wife, owner Eugenie Woo, hope to open the approximately 35-seat restaurant by spring 2016 at 1295 Prospect Ave. between Greenwood Avenue and Reeve Place.

Diners can expect Southern staples such as fried chicken, ribs, "ridiculously good" candied yams and collard greens. But Woo said chef Scott "likes to play" in the kitchen, so the menu won't be limited only to traditional soul food.

"It's the kind of food that pulls at your heart strings," Woo said. "I think it will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It will be a lively but welcoming and fun environment."

There are plans to host live music on the weekends at the new restaurant, which will start out with dinner service only but may expand to brunch after it's been open for a bit, Woo said.

Woo and Scott are gearing up to celebrate the five-year anniversary of Brooklyn Commune with a neighborhood party Friday, Nov. 27.

The celebration will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include giveaways of Brooklyn Commune's popular Tomato Jam, samples from other local vendors, live music and $10 gift cards to Butterfunk Kitchen.
