UPPER WEST SIDE — A woman was hit and killed by a driver Friday evening while she was crossing West End Avenue at West 64th Street, police said.

The 86-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, was walking east on West End Avenue at West 64th Street around 5:10 p.m. when she was hit by a driver heading north on the avenue, police said.

She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to officials.

The driver was behind the wheel of a 2002 Toyota Camry and remained at the scene of the crash, police said. Officials did not release the driver's identity.

The driver has not yet been charged with any criminality and it was not clear whether the woman had the right of way while crossing, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

In the past, residents have called West End Avenue "problematic" and "dangerous."

After a series of deaths on the avenue in 2014, the Department of Transportation added pedestrian islands to make it safer for people crossing at West 72nd Street, West 79th Street, West 95th Street and West 97th Street.

Another elderly woman, 88-year-old Luisa Rosario, was hit and killed by a cab driver on Columbus Avenue on Sunday.
