NEW YORK CITY — Shorts in November? Yep.

The first week of November has been among the warmest on record, according to the National Weather Service.

At noon on Friday, temperatures in New York City reached 72 degrees.

The high temperatures will last throughout Friday, but Saturday was expected to be cooler, with a cold front passing through during the night, said Jeffrey Tounge, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service based in New York.

Only twice since official measurements began in 1869 has the city experienced warmer weather on Nov. 6: on this date in 1948, New Yorkers sweated in 74 degrees Fahrenheit. A high of 73 degrees was recorded in 1959."This is highly anomalous, and as warm as it really gets in the beginning of November," Tounge said.

Tounge attributed the high temperatures to variations in jet stream patterns.

"It's the patterns of winds that go around the planet. When there's a dip in one side it bounces up on the other," Tounge said.

"It's cold and white in the western United States, and as a result the eastern part has been very mild."

New Yorkers took to Twitter Friday morning to express their bewilderment over the muggy heat.

Twitter user Antwan Duncan urged New Yorkers to think twice before reverting to summer footwear.

Some were blissful at the thought of a t-shirt-compatible November morning.

Although there's be no snowfall in the near forecast, Tounge suggested New Yorkers take advantage of the unseasonable warmth.

"People should go out and enjoy it because it's going to cool off," Tounge said.

"Take the little time that's left today and get out and take advantage of the warm weather."
