WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Pawn shops, phone booths, an adult movie theater — these are a few of the set pieces taking Washington Heights back in time to a grittier New York for the filming of the HBO drama series "The Deuce," starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Severals storefronts along Amsterdam Avenue between 164th and 166th streets were reimagined this week to shoot scenes for the show, which reportedly centers on the rise of the porn industry in Times Square during the 1970s and '80s.
"I didn't know they were filming," said Angela Abreu, local resident and mom, "so it was weird."
Filming is scheduled to wrap up Wednesday, although the production office said it could continue through Thursday.
