EAST VILLAGE — A neighborhood gift shop is staging a live horror show — complete with blood, guts and candy — in its front windows on Halloween.

On Halloween night, Exit 9 Gift Emporium on Avenue A near East Fourth Street will present “The Doctor is IN… SANE!” an original show about an unlucky patient who goes under the knife with the demented Dr. Frankenchef and his nurse, Ghoulia Childs, said Charles Branstool, who started the macabre performance last year.

“Last year we were doing gross things behind the screen but this year’s going to have a more culinary element. Think part surgeon, part chef,” he said.

The show — which promises “spine-tingling scenes of medical malpractice” — will be part live action and part shadow play, with grislier elements suggested behind a screen, Branstool said.

This year, he added, the show will also serve some of the patient’s “organs” to the audience, which will really be pieces of wrapped candy.

“It’s all imagined, of course,” he said.

Branstool, Julie DeLano, the shop’s window designer, and their friends will perform two hour-long shows in the window, free for anyone who want to stop by and watch from the outside.

“Whoever wants to stop can and whoever doesn’t want to can keep going,” he said.

The show runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 31 at 51 Avenue A.
