ASTORIA — Soon, Astoria residents will get a better idea of when their next train is coming.

New screens will roll out at five N/Q subway stations in Queens next year that will let riders know how close the nearest train is — a precursor to the countdown clocks that will come later, according to the MTA.

The screens will be added at the 36th Street, 39th Street, Broadway, 30th Avenue and Astoria Boulevard stations by the end of 2016, and will say how many stops away the closest train is, MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.

The Astoria Post first reported the new plans.

The visuals will be accompanied by audio announcements broadcasted over loudspeakers, which the MTA first began using in Astoria in 2013.

Countdown clocks — giving straphangers the exact number of minutes until the next train arrives — are expected to be installed at the Astoria N/Q stations by 2020, Ortiz said.
