BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Bed-Stuy favorite SCRATCHbread is closing its doors this weekend, doling out its last servings of grits, sourdough bread and CHOPPEDegg melt sandwiches.
The neighborhood bakery will shut down for good on Oct. 11, the eatery announced in a newsletter last week.
“Small business is a brutal, endless beating if you can't get ahead,” owner Matthew Tilden wrote in the lengthy email, with explanations laid out like stanzas in poem.
“This thing created opportunities, supported so many now, I’ve got more debt than 3 lifetimes.”
The owner goes on to say that “just one investor would have changed everything” and “a partner would have made things smarter,” as first reported by Brooklyn Magazine.
Tilden could not be reached for comment.
The popular eatery at the corner of Bedford and Lexington avenues often had long lines snaking around outside the bakery’s multicolored walls.
SCRATCHbread opened at 1069 Bedford Ave. in 2010, with customers requesting fresh brownies, sticky buns and made-to-order sandwiches, salads and grits from the business’ walk-up window.
Less than one month before SCRATCHbread’s own closure, the eatery’s reps lamented the shuttering of another neighborhood favorite, Do or Dine, which closed down half a block away in early September.
