SOUTH WILLIAMSBURG — A man snuck into a Brooklyn synagogue Sunday and stole $15 worth of Domino sugar cubes, police said.
David Montanez, 54, was arrested on seven charges after the Oct. 4 incident at Yeshiva Ahavas Israel synagogue at 6 Lee Ave., according to police and a criminal complaint.
The property manager told police he saw Montanez enter the synagogue about 1:55 a.m., take a bag and go into the kitchen, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.
When the manager confronted him, Montanez dropped the bag and ran, prosecutors said.
The bag contained boxes of Domino sugar cubes, valued at approximately $15, according to police.
Montanez was charged with burglary, petit larceny, criminal trespass and criminal possession of stolen property.
Montanez is being held in lieu of $7,500 bail. The synagogue did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Last week's incident was not the first time Montanez was arrested for stealing from local religious buildings.
He was charged with burglarizing a synagogue school in August, according to the DA.
He was spotted entering the school at 128 Rutledge St. around 12:25 p.m. on Aug. 8, according to a criminal complaint.
He left shortly afterward with a black garbage bag containing a power drill belonging to the school, the complaint said.
Montanez was released on his own recognizance after the summertime charges, officials said.
His attorney did not have a comment, saying it was too early in the proceedings.
