LONG ISLAND CITY — You can catch some of the world's best pétanque players in Queens this week.

M. Wells Steakhouse will host three of the game's top players Thursday afternoon, where they'll lead a pétanque demonstration and play in a short tournament in the courts next door to the restaurant, according to the eatery.

"These are three of the best players in the world," said Aaron Weeks, the restaurant's manager, who described the game as a more aggressive version of bocce.

It involves throwing small balls down the court with the goal of getting them closest to a smaller ball, while also aiming to knock your opponent's balls out.

"It's pretty exciting and pretty fun to watch," Weeks said.

The players participating in the event are Dylan Rocher and Damien Hureau, of France, and Claudy Weibel of Belgium. Each has or formerly held world champion titles in the game, according to organizers.

The athletes are in town for the New York International Open in Bryant Park this weekend, but will stop off at the steakhouse first, where the owners have built pétanque courts in a lot adjacent to the restaurant on Crescent Street and 44th Road.

The courts became a small hub this summer for local players of the game.

"We built courts at our restaurant this past spring, and we have tournaments every Sunday," Weeks said.

Thursday's event starts at 4 p.m., beginning with skills demonstration, followed by a short tournament with teams. Those interested in playing should email Info@MagasinWells.com to secure a spot.

The restaurant will be open for drinks after, followed by dinner service starting at 5:30 p.m.
