EAST VILLAGE — Community groups are coming together to remember neighborhood activist and urban gardening pioneer Adam Purple on Saturday.

Purple — a legendary Lower East Side nature enthusiast best known for the “Garden of Eden” a 15,000-square-foot garden on Forsyth Street that was demolished in 1986 — passed away Sept. 14 after an apparent heart attack, according to Time’s Up, an environmental group that had taken care of Purple over the past few years.

Memorial activities include an exhibit dedicated to Purple at the Museum of Urban Reclaimed Space, located at 155 Avenue C, which features photos, videos and memorabilia of his life and work, according to a press release.

At the same time, La Plaza Cultural Community Garden, located on East Ninth Street and Avenue C, will hold a mini-fair in honor of Purple and his work. The event will include spoken word tributes, performances and other activities as well as refreshments from Angelica Kitchen, according to the release.

Time’s Up is also raising tax-deductible donations for a green burial at Greensprings Natural Burial Preserve in Newfield, N.Y. through the group’s website, the organization announced. The burial is scheduled for Sept. 25 on 1 p.m.

Both events are free and run from 4 to 8 p.m. Click here for more information.
