Group Flips Taxi After Carjacking Cabbie, Police Say

By Aidan Gardiner | September 15, 2015 9:56am

MANHATTAN — One man was arrested after he and three other passengers punched a cabbie, stole his taxi and then crashed it in the Financial District early Tuesday, police said.

The four men, who appeared to range in age from late teens to mid-20s, got into the cab at Eighth Avenue and West 32nd Street about 1 a.m. and were driven south, making stops at Union Square and St. Marks Place, an NYPD spokesman said.

They got out at Water and Wall streets, but started arguing about the fare with the driver, whose name and age were not immediately released, police said.

When the driver got out, one of the men punched him in the chest, an NYPD spokesman said.

The men all jumped back into the cab and drove off, only to crash and flip the taxi near John and South streets at roughly 2:30 a.m., police said.

Three of them managed to flee, but police caught a 25-year-old nearby, police said. His name was not immediately released.

The cab driver refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

A spokesman for the Taxi and Limousine Commission did not immediately have information about the crash.
