ASTORIA — The late Jim Henson, who endeared himself to generations of children through his work on "The Muppets" and "Sesame Street," among other groundbreaking programming, would have turned 79 this month.

The Museum of the Moving Image will celebrate the legendary puppeteer's birthday with a day of kid-friendly programs inspired by his work, including puppet-making, puppet karaoke and a conversation with one of Jim Henson Company's longtime designers.

The event, on Sept. 26, (two days after Henson's birthday) will also offer a sneak peek of the kind of activities the museum plans to offer when it opens a permanent exhibit on Henson's career this winter, which is set to include hundreds of his iconic puppets and other props.

The birthday celebration will include activities from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., where kids will be able to make their own puppets out of brown paper bags, do "puppet karaoke" — where they'll lip sync a song with one of their creations — and watch Henson Company shows like "Sid the Science Kid" and "Dinosaur Train."

At 1:30 p.m., the museum will present a live discussion with Rollie Krewson, a puppet builder and designer who has worked on popular Henson productions like "The Muppet Show," "Sesame Street," "Fraggle Rock," "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas," and "The Dark Crystal."

She'll talk about her more than 40-year career and show clips from some of the favorite scenes she's worked on. The discussion is recommended for kids and adults 10 and up, and tickets cost $12.
