STATEN ISLAND — Write-in candidate Joan Illuzzi defeated Michael McMahon to win the Conservative Party primary in the Staten Island District Attorney race on Thursday night.

The Republican Illuzzi defeated her Democratic opponent McMahon in the primary with 58 percent of the vote, according to the Board of Elections. A total of 866 people voted in the election.

"I am so proud to see Staten Island Conservatives stand up for their beliefs and their party to choose a candidate for District Attorney that truly represents them and their values," Illuzzi said in a statement.

"Today's victory proves that Conservatives, like all Staten Islanders, want an experienced prosecutor, and not a career politician, as their next District Attorney."

While McMahon had been officially backed by the Conservative party, Illuzzi collected enough signatures to force a primary as a write-in candidate, the Staten Island Advance reported.

McMahon and Illuzzi will face off again in the general election on Nov. 3 to vie to replace Rep. Dan Donovan as Staten Island's top prosecutor.
