PROSPECT HEIGHTS — Now for something really nutty.

A new vegan cheese shop is opening this fall in Prospect Heights, bringing nut-based specialty cheeses to a Washington Avenue storefront along with a selection of sandwiches, salads and other picnic fixings, its owner said.

Riverdel cheese shop, at 820 Washington Ave. between St. Johns and Lincoln places, is a combination of two of owner Michaela Grob's passions: great food and a love of animals. But the store is for all customers, not just vegans, she said.

“The idea is really to let people know there’s cheese out there that doesn’t have to be made from dairy,” Grob said. “It’s about good food, not about it being labeled as vegan.”

The shop will make two or three vegan cheese in-house and will carry several other brands as well, including Williamsburg-based Dr. Cow, Miyoko’s Kitchen, Treeline, SunRAWise and Cheezehound.

Riverdel will serve sandwiches, small salads, snacks like mac and cheese and “lots of condiments,” like mustards and crackers, said Grob, who also hopes to offer bottles of wine and beer for take-out, she said.

“If you’re on your way to the park, pick up a sandwich and something to drink. That’s what we want to offer,” she said.

Grob hopes to open the new store in late October or early November, she said. For more information or to sign up for Riverdel’s newsletter, visit the shop’s website.
