WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A man followed a woman into the elevator of her apartment building and tried to rape her before she fought him off last week, the NYPD said.

The 33-year-old woman and the suspect got into the elevator of her West 172nd Street apartment building at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, police said. The suspect followed the woman when she got off the elevator at her floor and tried to rape her when she started to open her apartment door, police said.

The woman was able to fight her attacker off, get inside her apartment and lock the door, police said.

The man then fled the building, police said.

The suspect is seen in surveillance footage wearing glasses, a red T-shirt and a dark baseball cap with a red brim.

Police ask that anyone with information call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
