WEST VILLAGE — A man was caught masturbating near children in the middle of the day in Hudson River Park, police said.

Police said the 31-year-old man was spotted by a bystander about 11 a.m. on Aug. 13 at the northwest corner of West 11th Street.

The witness told officers he watched the man sit down in in an alcove of the park that holds a cluster of tables and chairs and open his pants, exposing his genitals to public view, police said.

The man began to masturbate, sitting about 15 or 20 yards from some children, a witness told police.

The witness told officers the man masturbated for nearly 30 minutes, police said.

The man had left by the time the witness reported the incident to police, but officers were able to track him down after a quick scan of the area, police said.

He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor public lewdness and a violation for exposing himself, police said.

He was released by a judge without bail and is due back in court on Oct. 8. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
