TIMES SQUARE — Following the recent push from the mayor and the governor to regulate Times Square's controversial bare-chested ladies, one artist — who's been painting nudes in public for years — took to the streets to show his support for the plight of the "desnudas."
Andy Golub, 49, who's known for his bright-colored nudes, will be painting several nude models each afternoon until this Saturday between 46th and 47th Streets on Broadway, he said.
"It's legal and I think that people sort of need to get over it," Golub said.
In 2011, Golub and a model were arrested for body painting in Times Square, but all charges were dropped. Since then he's organized Bodypainting Day in New York and other cities across the world where around 100 nude models get painted.
Golub worried that all of the advocacy he's done for public nudity had been set back by recent talk of regulating women who work for tips while topless.
"[It's a] setback, now that the whole idea is being called into question," he said. "Non-sexual nudity is not only not inappropriate, but legal."
Golub and his models can be found from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon in Times Square on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets.
