INWOOD — The Italian restaurant and lounge Maranello was closed by the city’s Health Department Tuesday for operating without a permit.

The eatery at 1 Nagle Ave. was closed temporarily for having an expired food service establishment permit, despite receiving warnings that it needed to be renewed, a Department of Health spokesman said.

Maranello will be allowed to re-open if and when it renews the permit.

All food service establishments, including restaurants, catering halls and even school cafeterias, are required to have such a permit. The permit process helps the Health Department ensure that each venue meets food safety requirements, according to the application materials.

Maranello has previously enjoyed a good track record with the Health Department, receiving an A grade during its most recent inspection in August 2014.

An employee who answered the phone at the restaurant said it was closed because of a water leak and would open again in a few days. She did not have any information on the permit issue.

Some neighbors commented that they were happy to see the space closed down because of the noise it generated.

At least 70 complaints about noise have been filed in the area immediately surrounding the restaurant since the beginning of May, according to data from 311,

The Department of Health does not address complaints about noise.
