GREENWICH VILLAGE — A broken main on West Third Street cut off water to an NYU law school dormitory through the night Wednesday evening, a university spokesman said.
The street remained closed Thursday morning. The break, which happened about 6 p.m. Wednesday, flooded three basements including two belonging to NYU dorms, FDNY Chief John Bley said.
It happened while an NYU contractor was working in the area, university spokesman Matt Nagel said. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed.
D’Agastino Hall lost water until 9 a.m. Thursday, Nagel said. The building, a law school residence, is on the same corner where the water main break occurred.
Two buildings were ultimately affected when the Department of Environmental Protection cut off the water, but service was restored Thursday, according to the DEP. NYU was completing work on the roadway Thursday.
The NYU Law School’s orientation week began Wednesday and runs through Monday, according to the school’s website.
