MIDTOWN — A man is in custody after police say that he stabbed another man on Wednesday afternoon, sending that victim to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

The incident happened at West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue at 4:45 p.m., police said.

Jose Lara, 55, said he witnessed the two men fighting in the street and on the sidewalk for about 20 minutes before one of them picked up a sharp metal sign attached to a pole and started swinging it.

"I saw the guy try to stab the other guy with the pole," Lara said.

One witness told DNAinfo the victim walked a half block before collapsing from his injuries. Another witness said the victim and suspect both ran into a homeless shelter at 317 West 45th St. after the fight.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center in serious but stable condition, officials said.

The suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday evening, police said.

Karl Daniel, who has lived on the block for 20 years, said police and emergency services are frequently called to the homeless shelter at 317 West 45th St.

"There are things happening over there every day," he said. "It's really awful."
