QUEENS — A Jamaica woman was shot in the ankle by a man she went out with several hours earlier, police said. But the man’s lawyer said her client was only trying to help the woman, whom he didn't even know.

The 20-year-old victim, police said, met Devin Germain, 24, at a club, on August 8. After hanging out together that night, Germain took her to her grandmother’s home on 148th Street, where she lives, police said.

When they showed up at the house, a verbal dispute erupted between Germain and the woman’s uncle, according to investigators.

At some point Germain left, but about 15 minutes later, around 9 a.m., he drove by in a white car and fired several rounds at the girl hitting her in the right ankle, police said.

The victim was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital where, according to the criminal complaint, she underwent surgery.

But Germain's lawyer, Ikiesha Al-Shabazz, said that he did not know the victim and police have the wrong man.

Germain saw the woman on the street after a party they both attended. Because she was intoxicated, he decided to take her home, Al-Shabazz said.

Germain, who drives a green BMW, told his lawyer that the woman got into his car but then she got out. Instead, a man he didn’t know either got in and started threatening him with a gun while demanding "compensation," according to Al-Shabazz.

Germain then crashed his car at the intersection of 150th Street and 105th Avenue and ran away, his lawyer said.

The crash took place about two blocks away from where the woman lives, court documents indicate.

Germain was arrested several hours later when he went to file a report, his lawyer said.

According to the criminal complaint, Germain told investigators that he met "a girl at a party" and "drove her home."

He also said "I was driving a 2000 BMW which I crashed," the complaint read.

Germain was charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and felony assault, police said.

He was released after posting $200,000 bond and is due back in court on October 28.
