HAMILTON HEIGHTS — Workers started construction on a 270-foot bridge that will cross over the Henry Hudson Parkway and give pedestrians access to the Hudson River waterfront.

The state’s Department of Transportation announced the start of the $24.4 million project slated for West 151st Street Tuesday.

“This new bridge will allow more New Yorkers to safely access Manhattan’s many recreational amenities, and we thank Governor Cuomo and Assemblyman Herman “Denny” Farrell, Jr. for their unwavering support of this project,” State DOT Commissioner Matthew Driscoll said in a statement.

The ADA-compliant project is expected to be completed by the end of 2016, according to the state DOT.

Previously, the State representatives told community members that a portion of the Henry Hudson Parkway will be closed for three days between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. at some point during construction. Additionally, a small section of the park will be closed during the wintertime, DNAinfo reported.

Currently, the nearest footbridge to 151st Street is 15 blocks south. That bridge connects people to Riverbank State Park, but if they want to walk north to Riverside Park they need to walk down stairs or use an elevator.

“Now, all people visiting our parks, including families with baby carriages, bicyclists and people with disabilities who historically had trouble entering, will have an additional way to access the parks,” State Assemblyman Farrell said in a statement.
