EAST HARLEM — A teenager locked in a cab after refusing to pay the $45 taxi fare broke out of the taxi and assaulted the driver, police said.
The 40-year-old driver of a green city cab picked up the 16-year-old passenger at Jamaica's Long Island Railroad station about 9:25 a.m. on August 11, according to the NYPD.
When they arrived to their destination, 122nd Street and Second Avenue, the passenger's two credit cards were declined. The teen told the driver that his girlfriend would pay the fare, police said.
The driver locked the back doors to keep the teen from leaving without paying, according to the police.
"Why did you lock the door?" the teen asked the driver, according to police.
The young man somehow broke out of the car and hit the driver in the face with a walking cane, according to the NYPD.
The teen, who has not been arrested, left without paying for the ride, police said.
