WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Major crime has decreased 7 percent overall this year in the 33rd Precinct, aside from a recent spike in assaults, NYPD data shows.

The number of incidents in five of the seven major crime categories have remained steady or decreased from January to August 2, 2015, when compared to the same time period last year.

Burglaries saw the most significant decrease, with 43 so far this year compared to 67 for the same time period last year, the data showed. The number of rapes, robberies and grand larcenies also declined.

Murders held steady with zero for both years to date.

However, felony assaults increased by almost 14 percent — with 117 so far this year compared to 103 during the same period last year, according to the data.

The uptick was led by a spike in incidents during the most recent 28-day period, with 16 occurring between July 6 and August 2, compared to just eight for the same time period in 2014.

The number of grand larcenies barely changed, with 23 so far this year compared to 22 last year.

The 33rd Precinct is one of four precincts testing out a new patrol model aimed at building stronger connections between officers and the community they serve.
