SUNSET PARK — A 72-year-old cyclist was struck and killed by the driver of an SUV on Wednesday evening in Sunset Park, police said.
Rigoberto Diaz was biking west on 48th Street when a black Chevrolet SUV traveling north on Third Avenue hit him, authorities said. The 56-year-old man driving the SUV remained on the scene.
Diaz, who lived around the corner from the crash site on 49th Street, was making a wide left turn onto Third Avenue when he was hit, according to officials.
Police said they found the victim lying unconscious and unresponsive on the roadway near Third Avenue and 48th Street at 5:25 p.m.
He was taken to Lutheran Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The investiation is ongoing.
