LONG ISLAND CITY — A young business student who was fighting for his life after being struck by a car last week while riding his bike in Queens Plaza has died, police said.

Kevin Lopez, 20, died Wednesday at New York Presbyterian Hospital, just over a week after he was hit by a 35-year-old driving a Mercedes Benz west on Queens Plaza North at 29th Street, authorities said.

Lopez, who had been riding north on 29th Street, was thrown from his bike and struck the car's windshield, according to police.

"We are devastated," said Lopez's aunt, Haydee Goris, who told DNAinfo her nephew had been biking home from class at LaGuardia Community College at the time of the incident. "We are in shock."

Lopez was studying business at the school and also worked at a Boston Market. In his spare time, he liked playing basketball and video games, his aunt said.

Goris said she and her family are looking for answers and "justice" for Lopez, who police said was riding in the designated bike lane on 29th Street when he was hit by the front end of the Mercedes.

A man was taken away from the scene of the crash in handcuffs, but police said no one has been arrested.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
