MANHATTAN — A man sitting on a log in Central Park park counting $1,700 in cash scared off a would-be thief who pulled a knife and him and demanded "Let me get that," police said.

The 31-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, had cashed a check earlier in the day and was sitting on the tree log in the park near East Drive and East 109th Street about 3:50 p.m. when the suspect came up and tried to rob him, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The suspect pulled out a knife and demanded he hand over the cash, police said.

The man shouted in reply, "Yo, get back!" scaring the would-be thief away, police said.

The suspect is about 30, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
