UPPER WEST SIDE — South African wine bar Tolani shut its doors for good on Thursday after previously planning to reopen under a new name.
The bar opened in October 2010, but owner Stanton Du Toit announced in May that he was bringing a new South African restaurant, Thanda, to the same 410 Amsterdam Ave. space.
However, he told DNAinfo Thursday that the arrangement to open the new restaurant at the address "did not work out."
Tolani thanked its staff and customers for a good five-year run in a Facebook post Wednesday evening.
"Today we bid you farewell, and we Thank you from the bottom our hearts for all your unwavering support and love for Tolani" the post read.
Du Toit has found another space for Thanda, but could not yet reveal the location due to "red tape," he said.
Fans of the wine bar expressed sadness at its closure on Facebook.
"What???? This can't be happening! So very sad to see you go," one person wrote.
"What a bummer," another said.
