GREENWICH VILLAGE — A 28-year-old homeless man was arrested for lying on a bench in Washington Square Park, and then resisting arrest by throwing coffee on an officer, police said.

The man was lying on a park bench across from 60 Washington Square South with his sleeping bag, suitcase and another bag at 12:18 p.m. on July 21, police said.

When an officer told him to sit up and take his belongings off the bench, the man refused, police said.

When an officer tried to arrest the man, he threw the coffee and flailed his arms so he couldn't be handcuffed until the officer's partner stepped in to help, police said.

The man was charged with resisting arrest, disobeying a lawful direction or command in a park, and obstruction of sitting areas in a New York City park.

He is being held on $500 bail and is due back in court on Aug. 5. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
