GOWANUS — A shop that sells pricey handmade organic children's toys opens Friday on Third Avenue and 11th Street.
Hazel Village is opening its "flagship store" at 510 Third Ave., the company announced on Facebook.
The toy maker has received glowing reviews in "Vogue" and "W" for its line of cloth woodland creatures dressed in improbable outfits, each with its own backstory. One such creation is Ella the Toad, a 14-inch doll that wears a sparkly tutu and red booties and "likes to play kickball."
The toys have a modest, homespun look but they can retail for haute couture prices. Barneys sold a Hazel Village lion dressed in a tuxedo for $72.
Most of Hazel Village's stuffed animals are made at an "organic-certified fair labor factory" in India and sell for about $48, but some limited edition dolls that sell for as much as $96 are made at the company's Gowanus workshop.
Hazel Village also makes a small selection of kids' clothing and other toys. The company was founded in 2010 by designer Jane Van Cleef, according to its website.
