QUEENS — The cyclist struck by a car on the approach to the Queensboro Bridge Tuesday is fighting for his life, his aunt said.

Kevin Lopez, 20, a LaGuardia Community College business student who was biking home from class, suffered severe brain injuries in the crash, his aunt Haydee Goris, 34, said.

"We’re in the hospital now," Goris said. "We’re just keeping strong. We’re just hoping for the best."

Lopez often commuted the short distance between college and his home in Long Island City by bike, she said.

The journey is less than two miles.

He was hit by a black Mercedes at 2:15 p.m., fire officials said. The driver was taken into custody at the scene, but no arrests have been made, police said.

Lopez was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, according to witnesses and photos of the aftermath of the crash.

It wasn't immediately clear who had the right of way.

When he wasn't studying, Lopez worked at Boston Market, his aunt said, and he enjoyed playing basketball, video games and riding his bike.

"We’re all devastated," Goris said. "We’re just praying and having a lot of hope and faith."
