EAST HARLEM — A man used a stolen Gap credit card to buy two monthly-unlimited metro cards at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, police said.

When police arrested Ritchard Cruz, 49, at 11 a.m. Friday, for the theft they also found a stolen Capital One card, driver’s license, prescription card, $75 in cash, and a lottery ticket, according to the NYPD.

The precinct has been fighting against a sharp increase in identity theft crimes in the last couple of years, police said.

Between January and July of 2015 there have been 48 cases of identity theft. That is double from the 19 they saw during the same time period in 2012.

Cruz was charged with multiple counts of grand larceny and possession of stolen property. He is due in court July 30, records show.

His attorney did not immediately respond to questions about his case.

The precinct has been combating the rise of identity theft by increasing awareness campaigns and allowing people to shred private documents in their office.
