BATH BEACH — A woman and a 9-month-old baby boy were struck and injured by a van in a marked crosswalk on Friday afternoon, polcie said.

The two were rushed to the hospital in stable condition, police said.

The collision happened just before 1 p.m. at the busy intersection of Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue, police said. The woman and child were crossing the intersection when a van headed southbound on Bay Parkway, tried to make a right hand turn and ran into them, police said.

Karen Vitello, 61, saw the aftermath of the incident from her apartment window that overlooks the busy intersection.

"The baby... had a gash, they were all on stretchers," she said.

Vitello said the heavily trafficked intersection was often a source of worry.

"We run across the street," she said. "It's very dangerous, lots of accidents."

Both intersecting streets have two lanes of traffic and additional turning lanes and the intersection is just a block away from the Shore Parkway.

"People are coming from the highway, they still think they're on the highway," said Victoria Battaoui, 36, who was with her two young children headed home from the nearby Bensonhurst Park. "There's a playground right there."

The 28-year-old driver who hit the woman and child remained at the scene and an investigation is ongoing, police said.
