MANHATTAN — A woman was standing outside Alphabet City's Riis Houses Wednesday night when a man started fighting with someone and accidentally shot her in the foot, police said.

The fight broke out outside 178 Avenue D, near East 12th Street, about 11 p.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

"I heard five shots. There were short pauses between. I didn't look out my window after that," said one woman, 37, who lives nearby and refused to give her name.

The victim was treated at Bellevue Hospital where she was listed in stable condition, police said.

There were no immediate arrests, police said.

"Gunshots are nothing new around here, but it's getting old, getting tiring. You feel like a hostage in your own neighborhood," the witness said.
