PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — A new dessert shop serving housemade chocolate and gelato is set to open in the neighborhood next month, its owner said this week.
Michael Allen of Desserts by Michael Allen said he’s aiming to open the doors of a new storefront on Nostrand Avenue between Midwood Street and Rutland Road by mid-August.
Allen has run his dessert-making business since 2008, first in a Clinton Hill storefront on Washington Avenue and then at the Fresh Fanatic market nearby. But since moving to Prospect-Lefferts Gardens last year, Allen said he’s excited to bring his sweets to his own neighborhood.
“There’s tremendous growth value here. I see it being Clinton Hill all over again,” he said. “Nostrand Avenue is a beautiful roadway. There’s so much potential.”
His new store will serve all kinds of desserts, including healthy items for those with gluten-free, vegan and raw diets along with a tempting assortment of cakes, tarts and ice cream and savory snacks such as sandwiches, quiches and coffee.
“We have the good, the bad and the ugly on the menu,” he said.
The dessert shop will also make chocolates and gelato inside a new “chocolate room” in the basement, he said, which will handle all manufacturing for the confectionary business at large.
“We’re moving all the production over to Prospect-Lefferts Gardens,” he said.
Desserts by Michael Allen is located at 1149 Nostrand Ave. and will be open seven day a week with hours to be determined, Allen said. For more information, visit the store’s website.
