MOTT HAVEN — The longtime boyfriend of a Bronx mother of six who was beaten to death with a hammer last week has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, police said.

Darrell Gibbs, 50, got into a fight with 53-year-old Wanda Martin in their Mott Haven apartment on Thursday night in the Mitchel Houses and he attacked her, according to police and friends.

Martin was found unconscious with stab wounds to her back and blunt force trauma to her head, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and police quickly named Gibbs as the suspect and tracked him down in Queens.

The couple did not have a documented history of violence but often fought with each other, police said.

However, friends noted they had never seen Gibbs act violently toward Martin.

Martin had been a foster mother for six children but decided to adopt them all. They were all between the ages 9 and 16 and still lived with her, police and friends said.

Gibbs will likely be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
