EAST WILLIAMSBURG — Motorcycle theft has gone up in East and South Williamsburg, local police said.

In the 28-day period ending June 5, there were 23 incidents of grand larceny auto theft — a huge jump from the nine incidents in the same period last year.

The rise is being driven by motorcyle thefts, said Inspector Mark DiPaolo, commanding officer of the 90th precinct.

Mostly Ducati, Yamaha and Kawasaki motorcyles are being targeted, DiPaolo said.

Many times, the thief realizes that the steering wheel isn't locked, making it easy to snag the vehicle, he said.

The commanding officer recommended parking motorcyles on well-lit blocks and using proper locks to secure tires and steering wheels.

If you park near your home, make sure any exterior video cameras are turned on, DiPaolo added.

"When anybody sees a crime or suspects something is going on, they should call 911," he said.

A total of 78 grand larceny auto incidents have been reported in the precinct this year so far, though it's unclear what percentage of them are motorcyle thefts.
