Quick-Service Bar and Cafe 'P.D.Q.' Opens in Carroll Gardens

CARROLL GARDENS — A tiny new quick-service cafe and cocktail bar is hoping to be a quiet spot for locals to kick back with a book or catch up on some conversation in the neighborhood.

P.D.Q., which stands for "Pretty Damn Quick" — no relation to the PDT ("Please Don't Tell") speakeasy in the East Village — is in the middle of its soft launch after quietly opening in June with limited hours.

The bar and cafe, located at 359 Sackett St. near Smith Street, is the latest addition to the area's food and drink scene from local bar owners Regina Myers and Tyler Maganzini.

The couple, who are engaged, are controlling owners at Black Mountain Wine House and Bar San Miguel as well as minority partners at Union Grounds.

In November, neighbors blasted plans for P.D.Q. at a Community Board 6 license and permits meeting for wanting to bring hard liquor to their "family block" on Sackett Street.

So far, P.D.Q. has "yet to have any sort of negative response from anyone on the block," Myers said. There are no 311 noise complaints filed against the venue, records show.

"It's been really well received so far," she added.

The name P.D.Q. "comes from a whole multitude of things," said Myers, whose grandmother, a former military secretary, still regularly uses the expression. It also refers to the tiny eatery's "café quick" service, meaning food and drinks will be brought out as quickly as possible, she said.

The venue holds a little over a dozen seats and will play soft recorded music.

"It's a place meant for quiet, lovely conversation, book reading and working on papers," she said.

P.D.Q. is currently open from 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through Sunday and they plan to open regularly at 11 a.m. next month, Myers said.

Myers described the menu, which is still being developed, as "tapas-style" with small shareable plates such as edamame hummus, local burrata with stewed figs, white bean and bacon cassoulet, meat and cheese plates, and sandwiches for $6.

Along with cocktails and wines by the glass, P.D.Q. also serves a selection of European-style non-alcoholic beverages such as "OJ Pressé," "Café Shakeratta" and "Green Frappé."

They currently only serve cold brews but hot coffees will be added to the menu soon.
